Kurzweil 3000:



A software program that allows the student to scan printed material into the computer from a document, book, newspaper, etc. Text can be edited. Sentences and words are highlighted as the computer reads the text aloud. The student can choose the voice, speed and highlighting colors. In addition, the student can type in his/her own documents to hear characters and words spoken out loud. Other features include spell checking and word prediction to help the student express ideas. The student can highlight, take notes (sticky and/or voice notes) and add bookmarks in documents as well as hear web sites read aloud.

Kurzweil 3000 Instructions

 

Turn on the scanner.

Open the Kurzweil 3000 icon on the desktop.

 

To scan a page:

1.  Lay the page flat on the scanner glass, print side down.

2.  Close the scanner lid.

3.  Click Scan in the main toolbar.

 

To hear Kurzweil 3000 read a scanned page:

1.  Select Read in the main toolbar.

2.  To stop reading, click Pause.

3.  To change the reading speed, use the WPM (words per minute) control in the  
reading toolbar.

4.  To change the reading voice, open the Tools menu and choose Options.

5.  In the Reading tab, use the Speaker list to choose a voice.

6.  To look up the meaning of a word, select the word, click Definition in the main toolbar, click Read in the main toolbar to hear the definition.

 

To type your own document:

1.  Click New in the main toolbar.

2.  Start typing in the empty document that appears.

3.  To save your work, click Save in the main toolbar.

 

To use word prediction:

1.  Click the Crystal Ball in the Writing toolbar.

2.  Click a number to complete a word while typing, or to insert a word from the keyboard, press Control and the number of the word to insert.

 

To format typed documents using the writing toolbar:

1.  Choose a Font.

2.  Choose a Font Size.

3.  Choose a Font Style.

 

To take notes as you read:

1.  Click at the place where you want to attach the note.

2.  Click Note in the Study Skills toolbar.

3.  Type into the note window, then click Close in the Study Skills toolbar.

 

To highlight text:

1.  Click a Highlighter Color in the Study Skills toolbar.

2.  Drag the cursor over the text to highlight.

3.  Click the highlighter again to stop.

 

To use sticky notes:

1.  Click Sticky Note in the Study Skills toolbar.

2.  Drag the cursor to define the size of the sticky note.

3.  Type into the note window, then click Close in the Study Skills toolbar.

 

To create a study guide:

1.  Highlight main ideas and supporting details.

2.  Open the File menu and select Extract, then Highlights, to extract the highlighted text.

3.  Format the new document as needed.

 

To take a test:

1.  Scan in the test.

2.  Use text notes to provide answers.

3.  Print the entire test, or extract only the answers. To extract answers, open the File menu and select Extract, then Notes.

 

To read the Web:

1.  Open the Read menu and choose Read the Web.

2.  Use the Web toolbar to help you read Web sites.

 

To change Kurzweil 3000 settings:

1.  Open the Tools menu and choose Options.

2.  Click a tab to change settings for that area.
